TDP is proud to sponsor this local group with a big heart. We have paid for a full years pitch fee for a second caravan in the Peak district.
Based in Wirksworth the HM Armed Forces Veterans Caravan Group provides invaluable social and practical support to members, especially those suffering with mental health issues following active service. The group operates in cooperation with Social Media support networks such as “leave no man behind” as well as front line Charities such as Veterans United Against Suicide.
Founder of the Veterans Caravan Group, and former Royal Marine, Mick Keen swam 128 lengths of the local swimming pool in under 2 hours to raise most of the original funds to equip the first Caravan. Mick suffers from Combat PTSD and has a subsequent heart condition. Through his own battles with his condition, including a serious suicide attempt, and through networking within the veterans community, it became clear that there was a real need to intercede and provide respite to veterans. The Wirksworth group has already inspired three other veterans clubs to begin their own caravan projects, and it is hoped that early next year there will be caravans available in Skegness, Paignton and Weston Supermare, all co-ordinated by the base in Wirksworth. The caravans are available to rent at nominal cost to help veterans and their families get a holiday away from the stress of everyday life
From their base at The Quarryman public house in Wirksworth, Mike and John are very grateful to TDP for their support, and that of the people and businesses in and around Wirksworth.
Mick is shown, on the left here, at a remembrance day memorial service.
