Plantex ® from DuPont

Landscape fabric Plantex ® by DuPont is a non-chemical weed barrier that lets soil and plants breathe while stopping weeds growing up from below.

Plantex® is the original landscape fabric for weed control. It was the first product to be endorsed by Kew Gardens and is used by many professional landscapers. The unique structure allows air, water and nutrients through to the soil and plant root. Plantex® effectively suppresses weeds.

The optimum pore size allows water through at a measured rate. Too fast and water lays in the substrate. Too slow and it will pool under slabs or block paving that can cause efflorescence, or lime bloom.

Plantex ® Landscape Fabric The Non-Chemical Weed Control

There is no need for chemical-based weed killers when Plantex® provides long-lasting, highly effective weed control that is environmentally friendly and keeps weeds underground.

Ideal for use in hard and soft landscaping applications, Plantex® landscape fabric helps you maintain weed-free gardens, lawns, paths, patios, block paved drives and artificial turf.

Plantex® weed control is specifically designed for landscaping and has a proven 30 year history.

Frequently asked questions

Any way. DuPont™ Plantex® can even be laid vertically to stop weeds penetrating from next door.

Yes. Liquid feed will pass straight through. The nutrients in solid feed will also leach through over a short time, therefore providing a more controlled feed.

Yes. Although slightly more fiddly than a new bed, DuPont™ Plantex® can be cut around the base of your plants. Remember to allow a 100mm overlap.

When covered with the correct depth of mulch, DuPont™ Plantex® will last for over 25 years. If used uncovered or with insufficient cover the ultra violet rays in sunlight will weaken the tensile strength of DuPont™ Plantex®.

Yes. DuPont™ Plantex® is used under footpaths in many public parks. It is also used under golf bunkers and turfed sports surfaces.

No. It is chemically inert. It can even be used to line pond plant baskets and as a filter layer in fish tanks.

There are a few weeds and grasses that need special attention. With sharp pointed grasses like couch it is advisable to double the amount of mulch cover (e.g. bark use 100mm). If you wish, you can spray the area first with a glyphosate-based weed killer.

Ground creeping weeds like bindweed and ground elder will not penetrate DuPont™ Plantex®. However, where you have ground creeping weeds make sure the edges of the DuPont™ Plantex® are buried at least 100mm into the ground around the edge of the bed.

One weed we all fear is Mare’s tail. For this we recommend a hand full of lime placed around the infected area, then use two layers of DuPont™ Plantex® topped up with a double thickness of mulch. We have had an 85% success rate with this weed, but no guarantees!

Remember Plantex is designed to control weeds and grasses not plants and shrubs. Particularly plants with adventitious mirror shoot systems such as brambles have a very strong woody stem, and have the ability to sprout roots from parts of the plant that are not actual roots, meaning it can extend and propagate itself from several means. This type of plant cannot be stopped by any weed control membrane. We always recommend if any of these mirror shoot system plants appear on top of the membrane they are removed immediately.

Where you have areas containing invasive weed or plant growth you are unsure of how to manage, Garden Designers, Landscape Architects and Garden Contractors will have this knowledge and be able to pass on after care advice when using weed control membranes.

Plantex works when combined with a mulch cover to suppress weeds.
Some preparation will help Plantex work harder for you. If using gravel make sure it is washed and not contaminated with weed seeds.
If tough perennial weeds, bulbs, vigorous plants and shrubs are present or if you are covering a lawn, clear the area prior to laying Plantex.

If surface weeds and grasses, unwanted plants and shrubs germinate remove by hand or with a contact weed killer before they have time to establish.
